# Stakeholder Sign-off

The exam checks whether the right owner approved against auditable evidence, and whether the work can survive handoff without its author.

## Definition

**Stakeholder sign-off** is the moment an accountable owner records their agreement — to cross a gate, accept a deliverable, or approve crossing a **stakeholder-owned line** such as a budget threshold. It is a decision by a *named* owner against evidence, not a group nod.

Sign-off is where handoff risk surfaces. A **design only the architect understands fails at handoff**: if the sole person who can explain or operate the system is its author, sign-off is hollow — the moment that person leaves, the outcome is unowned. Real sign-off requires the accepting stakeholder to understand what they are accepting, backed by an auditable **outcome document** (a **control-in-place** and a **named measurement owner**).

Sign-off also pairs with **compliance posture**: a **regulated checkpoint fires on the calendar**, and the sign-off it demands is a scheduled, non-negotiable event, not something triggered by a metric. Approving without the evidence, or letting one irreplaceable expert stand in for a durable control, are the two ways sign-off goes wrong.

## Exam trap

A sign-off is a trap when the approver cannot independently understand or operate what they approved — a design only its architect grasps has not truly been handed off.

## Commonly confused with

- **outcome-document** — The outcome document is the evidence signed against; sign-off is the recorded acceptance of it.
